Advertising Agencies

The sector at a glance

Advertising and creative agencies are service businesses that sell brains and hours: they diagnose a business problem, write a brief, make the work, place it against an audience, and prove it moved something. The category spans full-service shops that do strategy, creative, production and media under one roof; creative-only independents that hand media to a specialist; media agencies that plan and buy; and the consultancy arms (Accenture Song, Deloitte Digital) that entered from the transformation side. The economics are what actually distinguish agencies from most other professional services: revenue arrives as retainers, project fees, performance fees or the residue of the old media commission, and margin is decided by staffing plans, blended rates, utilization and how hard the scope of work is defended. Buyers are CMOs, brand and media directors and — increasingly the real gatekeeper — procurement, who run pitches, benchmark rates against holding-company scale, and treat agency fees as a line to compress. Austin is a genuine agency market with a national-account shop (GSD&M), a repeat small-agency-of-the-year independent (Preacher), a multicultural and civic bench, and SXSW as an annual reason the industry shows up.
